The hobbits are alarmed, but, remembering the line of trees, they saddle up and head in that direction. Without meaning to do so, they sleep for several hours, and wake to find that it is late afternoon. Looking north, they see what they think is the line of trees that mark the East Road. The weather is fair, and they make good headway, until mid-day, when they come to a bowl-shaped hilltop. Feeling optimistic, they jog off on their ponies, headed north. The hobbits wake the next morning and are seen on their way by Tom and Goldberry.
